‘Softboy Disco’, the second release by ScareBears, offers a scathing critique of performative ‘nice guy’ feminism, delivered with biting irony and raw frustration. The lyrics address hypocrisy head-on, whilst the chant-like chorus makes the critique both cathartic and memorable. Bold and provocative, the song fearlessly highlights the gulf between words and action.

Using ironic lyrics set to an infectious, upbeat rhythm, ‘Softboy Disco’ explores themes of emotional manipulation and toxic masculinity. The song skewers the typical guy who pretends to be progressive and claims to understand feminism better than women do. He positions himself as a kind of therapist, explaining what life is all about – a textbook case of mansplaining – while chatting with his friends and treating women like objects. ScareBears can’t grasp how someone can be so self-aware yet so cynical. Chilling, indeed. And a fucking pain in the arse.

Musically, it’s a powerful track built around a constant, catchy rhythm. Merging post-punk, reminiscent of Petrol Girls and IDLES, with electronica and hardcore, the song has an energetic, visceral edge. The result recalls a collision between the Slits and Delta 5, blending the funk swagger of the former with the hypnotic groove of the latter.

‘Softboy Disco’ is the second single from ScareBears’ debut EP Worse for Everyone, which is due to be out in May 2026. While we eagerly await the full release, this one’s well worth a listen…and a laugh!
