Anna Pidgorna is a Ukrainian musician from Canada who traveled to Ukraine to study with traditional music practitioners. Returning from this period abroad, she subsequently set out to study voice in Princeton with the intention of developing her own hybrid vocal sound. Her album, Invented Folksongs, consists of six songs, all in the same genre but quite distinct.
From the very beginning, you can hear the bandura and extremely traditional, deep folk vocals. The lyrics are reminiscent of old ritual and ceremonial songs we (Ukrainians) learned in school. For us, it has always been part of the curriculum to study folk songs in text format, covering various holidays such as Ivan Kupala, Easter, Christmas, and others. Ukrainian culture is very broad and reaches back hundreds of years. Many such traditional songs were passed down orally, and we are very lucky that manuscripts of these lyrics, which describe the rituals and lifestyle of our ancestors, still survive.
I really enjoy listening to stringed instruments, especially the cello and violin. Anna uses these instruments extensively to highlight the dramatic nature of the stories she uncovers.
Anna’s music is quite unusual and may not immediately be easy on the ear. The melodies convey narratives and drama, and her lyrics tell complete stories. For example, the track ‘What Else I Can Give Him’, tells the quite tragic, but very common, story dating back to a time when romantic relationships were on a completely different level. When women had no options, and were stuck at home.
The track ‘Teach Your Daughters’ tells another very tragic story. And while the music itself may be unusual and not exactly easy on the ear, the story itself is very sad and must be addressed because it deals with violence against women.
‘Second Meditation’ has a completely different mood. You can hear happy notes that remind me of the ringing of bells, often heard in Ukraine on holidays and other special occasions. This melody is very springlike, reminiscent of the blossoming of flowers and greenery around us.
In ‘Walk Under the Moon’, we hear more strong vocals from Anna; it’s very deep and contains more traditional exclamations, reminiscent of traditional Ukrainian songs. Especially songs from the mountainous regions, where such exclamations and shouts are more common as a means of communication throughout the mountains.
Overall, the album is very interesting in its sounds: not the most natural we’re used to hearing, even given the audacious scene of the LOUD WOMEN artists. I’d dare to call these sounds mysteriously Ukrainian, and with the themes Anna explores, this is truly heavy, meaningful music that perhaps not everyone will understand. But at the same time, I’m very glad that so many Ukrainian musicians dare to create such cultural music and present it on international platforms.

Повернувшись, вона згодом вирушила вивчати вокал у Принстоні з наміром розвинути власне гібридне вокальне звучання. Її альбом «Invented Folksongsі» складається з шести пісень, усі в одному жанрі, але досить відмінні.
З самого початку можна почути бандуру та надзвичайно традиційний, глибокий народний вокал. Тексти нагадують обрядові пісні, які ми вивчали в школі. Для нас вивчення народних пісень завжди було частиною навчальної програми, що охоплюють різні свята, такі як Іван Купала, Великдень, Різдво та інші. Українська культура дуже широка і сягає сотень років. Багато таких традиційних пісень передавались з вуст у вуста, і нам дуже пощастило, що рукописи цих текстів, які описують обряди та спосіб життя наших предків, досі збереглися.
Мені дуже подобається слухати струнні інструменти, особливо віолончель та скрипку. Анна широко використовує ці інструменти, щоб підкреслити драматичний характер історій, які вона розкриває.
Музика Анни досить незвичайна і може не одразу здатися легкою для звичайного вуха. Мелодії передають наративи та драму. Її тексти розповідають повноцінні історії. Наприклад, у треку «Що ще йому дати» історія досить трагічна, але дуже поширена, що сягає часів, коли романтичні стосунки були на зовсім іншому рівні. Коли жінки не мали вибору і були обмежені своїм господарством.
Трек «Навучайте дочок» розповідає дуже трагічну історію. І хоча сама музика може бути незвичайною та не зовсім звичною для слуху, сама історія дуже сумна і її потрібно поширювати, оскільки вона стосується насильства щодо жінок.
Трек «Друга медитація» має зовсім інший настрій. Ви можете почути радісні нотки, які нагадують мені дзвін дзвонів, який часто чути в Україні на свята та інші особливі події. Ця мелодія дуже весняна, нагадує цвітіння квітів та зелені навколо нас.
У треку «Погуляй під місяцем» ми чуємо більше вокалу від Анни; він дуже глибокий і містить більше традиційних вигуків, що нагадують традиційні українські пісні. Особливо пісні з гірських регіонів, де такі вигуки є більш поширеним засобом комунікації в горах.
Загалом, альбом дуже цікавий за своїм звучанням, не такий звичайний, до якого ми звикли, навіть враховуючи зухвалу сцену артисток LOUD WOMEN. Я б насмілилася назвати цей альбом таємничим українським, а з темами, які досліджує Анна, це справді важка, змістовна музика, яку, можливо, не всі зрозуміють. Але водночас я дуже рада, що так багато українських музикантів наважуються створювати таку культурну музику та презентувати її на міжнародних платформах.
