“How do you tell the story of a body?” queer choral extraordinaire Jenny Moore asks a riveted full house in the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room. It is a question she has been tackling for the best part of an hour in new, immersive musical Wild Mix. Part life story, part stream of consciousness, all enthralling, Wild Mix presents the agonies, ecstasies and in-betweens of queer life – religious trauma, strained relationships, found family, change – with wit, pathos, joy, and a punching bag full of water with a hydrophone!
The Southbank Centre’s KUNSTY programme – highlighting ‘uncategorisable’ queer performance work – is the perfect showcase for Wild Mix. It defies categorisation on every level – tribal rhythms blend with gospel vocalisations, frame autobiographical oration, become full ritual song, abstract into performance art, tumble into a boxing showcase, pause for a philosophising breath, then race ahead through some soul-shaking rhythm boxing with the full drum ensemble, and onward – each sequence an intimate invitation to experience Moore’s world.
Moore’s co-creators and castmates – Bianca Stephens, Luisa Gerstein, Barbara Pugliese, Sib Trigg and Zahra Haji Fath Ali Tehrani – are sensational, seamlessly transitioning between their roles as chorus, musicians, stagehands, boxers, and lead performers. The effervescent chemistry of this group is why Wild Mix works. Some familiar friends from F*Choir also make a moving appearance, voices as powerful and beautiful as ever. It is a true tour de force for Moore, a genuine reflection of the astonishing work she has undertaken on both a professional and personal level over the course of her life so far.
Wild Mix is touring to the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts in Brighton on the 29th January 2026 – be there!
