Bristol newcomers Looney Bergonzi have arrived with their debut single ‘Year 6 Disco’ (out 23 Sept on Welsh indie label BWGiBWGAN – pronounced “Boogie-Boogan,”). It’s lo-fi nostalgia spun through a hall of mirrors: part playground memory, part supernatural fever dream.
Their self-dubbed “Post (Art School) Jangle” / “Non-pop” sound stitches together scraps of found noise, bedroom poetry, and scratchy indie-folk minimalism. Think Young Marble Giants accidentally crashing a school disco and deciding to haunt it forever.
Band spearhead Eadie Young frames ‘Year 6 Disco’ as a reflection on awkward growing pains:
“Summer stirs up uncomfortable feelings and familiar thought: ‘I should be having fun.’ … You’ve convinced yourself you’re a vampire and you decide sulking under the table balancing cola and lemonade is the most mysterious thing you can do. The lights don’t turn green for you.”
Looney Bergonzi already have form — opening for Mermaid Chunky, collaborating with fashion designer Rabbit Baby, touring with Louis O’Hara (who now produces their work). But ‘Year 6 Disco’ feels like the real introduction: jittery, uneasy, and strangely beautiful.
The full collection, looney bergonzi, EP1, follows on 5 November. Until then, we’ll be sulking under the disco lights with our imaginary vampire fangs in.
