London-based composer and sound designer, Jo Quail, has officially unveiled her radiantly atmospheric seventh album, Notan, via her own label, AdderStone Records.
‘Embrace’ begins with faint, wail-like cries and waves of melancholy emanating from the depths of Quail’s electric cello. Shifting midway to melodic lullaby sequences and strung-out notes to hold onto, ‘Embrace’ evolves into a comfort blanket ready to catch you. Robust and soothing, this song is another brilliant capture of a musically abstract concept for Quail.
‘First Rain’ opens with soft and spacious piano mirroring gentle rainfall. Peaceful and elegantly repetitive, Quail mimics the hopeful aura of a rainy afternoon with arresting flair. Calming and grounding, ‘First Rain’ is a tranquil addition to any atmospheric playlists.
‘KingFisher’ features a musical portrait of an airy yet terrestrial soundscape via cello. With swirling uplift and expertly placed falls, Quail holds the translation of the natural world firmly in her composing grasp. Highlighting the creative fount that lies in the mundane minutiae, Quail invokes a gripping rendition of the King Fisher.
Notan is a technical and creative marvel of an album. Packed with Jo Quail’s instrumental proficiency and distinct artistry, this album radiates profundity and substance.
