Brooklyn-forged Big Thief returns for their sixth studio album, Double Infinity, set on turning their introspective, longing sound “into rock and roll.” Departing from their heavy folk influences and lead singer Adrianne Lenker’s signature delicate tone, Big Thief embraces a gorgeous new optimism in this nine-track venture.

For an album recorded in the depths of New York City’s winter, Double Infinity radiates sunshine. Lenker and bandmates Buck Meek and James Krivchenia recorded the album over three weeks in January 2025, recording at the Power Station. Despite the city’s temperature regularly dropping to subzero, the trio have successfully captured the warmth and spirit of a long, hot summer. Tracks such as ‘All Night All Day’, ‘Words’, and ‘Los Angeles’ feel more suited to soundtrack a drive into the sunset than songs to huddle by the fire.

This is the first album the band has released since bassist and founding member Max Oleartchik departed last year. Recording the album live with minimal overdubs, Big Thief have captured a massive sound thanks to the talented cohort of musicians joining them on Double Infinity. Alena Spanger, Caleb Michel, Hannah Cohen, Jon Nellen, Joshua Crumbly, June McDoom, Laraaji, Mikel Patrick Avery, and Mikey Buishas all lend their talents to the record. With Dom Monks on production and engineering duties, there were up to 12 collaborators performing on the album live at one time.

Double Infinity‘s sonic shift may come as a, hopefully welcome, surprise to fans. It follows their Grammy-nominated album, Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You, which fixated on the frail and sensitive qualities of Lenker’s songwriting. Big Thief’s latest project feels more at home with The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, embracing the “rock and roll” sound they set out to achieve.

Double Infinity is to be released via 4AD on 5 September 2025.
