Manchester feminist post-punks The Red Stains have released their latest single, Diana’s Seatbelt.
Diana’s Seatbelt sees the band adding their own bold – and satire-laden – commentary on the metaphorical car crash of culture, politics, and human connection that exists within a moral panic gripping society.
We’re witnessing a kind of societal collision, where everything is at odds with everything else, and no one seems to know how to stop it. It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion, and yet, we keep driving faster. Will the red button be pressed and blast civilisation into a thousand stars, as a Princess of Wales plate flies off the wall and you cower under the table for shelter? – The Red Stains
The track starts with one of Sterling’s throbbing basslines, over a disjointed, rattling drum beat. Then the fragmented, angular guitar joins in, adding a sense of urgent tension, before Natalie’s frenzied vocals kick in. We’re then grabbed by the hands and pulled into the chaos of a world driven by sensationalist panic and fear.
I hope the red button never gets pressed (obviously), but if it does… I hope I at least get to go out listening to The Red Stains.
