Bristol-based alt-country-rock artist Elly Hopkins releases her second single ‘Animal’ today; a moody guitar-driven urge for reconnection with the physical body, deeply rooted in nature.
Opening with drums that stalk and stride, a guitar that slinks and slithers and a bluesy, jazzy, prowl of a vocal, the verse leads into a plaintive refrain that at once claims and laments the raw instincts of the primal self, shaking off the ghosts and anxieties that haunt us.
‘I was sat at the kitchen table, stewing, spiralling, and feeling stuck. I picked up the guitar and out of the frustration came this rallying call… It’s sometimes easy to forget that as humans we are nature, not separate from it. We are animals.’ — Elly Hopkins
A richly emotive track that feels like a fragment of something beginning to be born, ‘Animal’ serves as a tantalising taste of the forthcoming self-released EP of the same name.
