The New Eves, an all-female quartet from Brighton, have announced their upcoming album The New Eve Is Rising, set to be released on 1 August. Alongside this, the band has shared the track ‘Rivers Run Red’, filled with poetic lyrics and circular bass lines.
The band, made up of Violet Farrer, Nina Winder-Lind, Kate Mager, and Ella Oona Russell, have a unique sound, evidently based in a wide range of influences – from poetry, to rock, to folk experimentalism.
“‘Rivers Run Red’, says Ella, originally was written “as this weird little song that Violet could do some dancing to.” The first version of the track featured Patti Smith lyrics, while Violet created ritualistic visuals on stage. Now, the track has turned into a well-developed track, complete with a wide range of instruments – even a matchbox, shaken by Kate.
“The initial lyrics are a poem written by Ella when she was a teenager. It was never intended to be a final part of the song, it just happened to be something she knew by heart whilst we were jamming. She actually wrote an alternative poem which inspired Kate’s lyrics later in the song, but in the end we went back to the teenage poem as that’s what everything had grown from in its strange chaotic way. This whole song was kind of an accident and because of that it’s had so many incarnations and has taken us to new places, like Nina’s ‘disco cello’ and Violet’s camping cup percussion debut. Now we love it.”
