Start screaming now: Jehnny Beth is back. The former Savages frontwoman and multi-hyphenate art-punk powerhouse has just dropped Broken Rib, the brutal and brilliant first single from her newly announced second solo album You Heartbreaker, You, out August 29 on Fiction Records.
With the guttural punch of Savages-era rage but laced with the raw vulnerability she carved open on her 2020 debut To Love Is To Live, Broken Rib is Jehnny at her most vital and visceral. “We learn to breathe with a broken rib,” she sings, somewhere between battle cry and whispered confession. It’s a track that demands to be heard.
The accompanying video, directed by Jehnny herself and longtime collaborator Johnny Hostile, is a nightmarish trip through a decaying world – all twitching limbs and splintered symbolism, echoing the song’s gut-punch urgency. And it’s only a taste of what’s to come.
Recorded and produced in France at 20L07 Studios with Hostile at the controls, You Heartbreaker, You promises to be a scorched-earth exploration of what it means to love, to suffer, and to scream through the chaos. “We’re living in a dark time, full of drama and barbarous tragedy,” Jehnny says. “It became clear to me that, in these times, we either learn how to scream really well, or we learn how to whisper.”
The tracklist reads like a manifesto: No Good For People, High Resolution Sadness, I See Your Pain – it’s emotional armour for 2025’s scorched terrain, punk poetry for the brokenhearted and battle-ready.
Known for some of the fiercest live shows of the last decade, Jehnny’s bringing her new material to the Rock N Roll Circus with Queens of the Stone Age in August, and she’ll also be spinning a DJ set at Glastonbury’s Shangri-La stage this June – because of course she will.
