Abnorm are an alternative rock band coming out of Newcastle, formed in 2021 and fronted by singer songwriter Abbie Rose. The band is known for their raw, powerful sound and emotive hard hitting lyrics. They have released their debut EP GIANT and it will stop you in your tracks.
“GIANT came from a place of empowerment. I wrote it when I was really angry and to me, the song is about regaining power from when someone has really pushed you too far and hurt you when you were most vulnerable. It’s about when someone that you trusted and cared for turns on you. ‘GIANT’ was me saying, to put it politely, “Get gone”. We did this artsy cool music video for ‘GIANT’ with Krzysztof Furgała at Caviar Studios, where it all gets more unhinged as the song develops.”
The EP was written and recorded at Blast Recording Studios with Andy Bell, which they then finished at home. As a DIY band they wanted to keep hold of the reins as they geared up for their first EP release. Production and mixing by London-based producer Alex McArthur and mastering legend Cicely Balston.
As a first multi-track release, GIANT showcases a wonderful variety in the bands style – from the title track, ‘GIANT’ which rages against those that wrong you and threatens to devour them whole, to ‘Petals’ which speaks of heart ache and finding yourself alone, but still in love. The music and lyrics of this EP take you through the gambit of emotions from righteous rage to the sweet longing of a love doomed to never work out.
With Abbie Rose on vocals, Ryan Brown on guitar and Adam Willis on drums, the sound they create is a powerful blend of Abbie’s diverse emotive vocals (sometimes raging and raw, sometimes enchanting and lilting), banging beats and epic guitar riffs.
