SACRED PAWS’ new album, Jump Into Life is out now via Rock Action. If you were looking for indie music to dance a heartbreak out to, this is it.
The Glasgow/London duo comprises Ray Aggs (Trash Kit, Shopping) and Eilidh Rodgers (Golden Grrrls). Their first album, Strike A Match, won the Scottish Album of the Year Award when it was released in 2017. In 2019, SACRED PAWS brought out their second offering, Run Around The Sun. Along with some excellent live performances – 2023 saw them opening for Belle & Sebastian so well they almost stole the stage. SACRED PAWS have been working on their 11-track third album for six years.
Aggs says of the opening track ‘Save Something’,
This song has been really special to us ever since we first wrote it and we wanted to make it as big as possible…it’s a pretty simple breakup song but one that’s trying to also be as hopeful and loving as possible.”
A couple of tracks linger over someone who’s emotionally unavailable. ‘Turn Me Down’ questions “I never saw you cry/do you even feel the pain?”. Meanwhile, ‘Another Day’ laments, “I thought I could break down the walls with a little patience/ but I was so wrong”. However, the songs remain upbeat – it might be a second listen before you realised the lyrics are anything other than positive.
Jump Into Life will appeal to fans of Belle and Sebastian, Pillow Queens, This Is The Kit and Martha. SACRED PAWS have retained the DIY feel of their earlier albums. Yet their latest LP is more developed and varied with gritty guitar, close vocal harmonies and post-punk influences. Jump Into Life is SACRED PAWS’ best album yet.
