Brooklyn’s indie-jazz rising artist Mei Semones is back with another incredible single, ‘I can do what I want’.
If you haven’t heard her music before, imagine the indie-pop sounds of beabadoobee but with intricate jazz melodies, and you’ll be in the right ballpark.
‘I can do what I want’ is a real exploration of technical skill; Mei makes highly ambitious guitar harmonics sound effortless, echoed by trickling string runs. Mei Semones’ often see-saw between rhythms and styles in her music; this feels particularly strong here with a driving indie-rock chorus reminiscent of favourites from the early 2000s.
‘I can do what I want’ is one of the most high-energy songs on the album, as well as one of the most challenging songs to play. Lyrically the song is centered around doing what I want and what is best for me, and I hope it empowers other people to do what they want & prioritize what is best for them too.
