Glasgow’s Cwfen (pronounced coven) has released an empowering and unapologetic track in their latest single ‘Wolfsbane’ – out now via New Heavy Sounds.

Comprised of Agnes Alder, Guy DeNuit, Rös Ranquinn, and Mary Thomas Baker, Cwfen is releasing wildly impressive tracks right out of the gate. ‘Wolfsbane’ is the next track unveiled from future album, Sorrows, debuting on 30 May, and it paints a dark and dynamic picture of Cwfen. This song is an unabashedly fierce comeuppance of the patriarchy that hits in all the right places. Dismantling all visions of what a woman “should” be, ‘Wolfsbane’ forges a new path forward over a crisp and bodied metal backing. Intermixing growled spoken word, shouts, and gothic, murky vocals reminiscent of Patti Smith, this track is equal parts heavy and hypnotic.

“It’s the burn-everything-to-the-ground song, and when I sing it, I’m addressing every woman in the room.

On the surface, it’s about poison. At its heart, it’s an ode to the untamed female rage that comes when the world tries to carve us into something smaller. It’s about the empowerment in that, and the strength we hold together. Given what’s going on in the world – reproductive rights gutted, LGBTQ+ lives weaponised, marginalised voices silenced – we need to remember how to be wild, and to find courage in that wildness.

I hope it ignites a spark of defiance. It’s about what happens when enough is enough. The shifting mood. The anger. The unrest. There couldn’t be a better time to release it.”

– Agnes Alder

For metal and goth fans alike, Cwfen is a fresh, hard-hitting sound that refuses to be pigeonholed, and I can’t wait for Sorrows to drop this May.
