Ómoia, a queercore five piece from Leeds, are taking emo, metal and hardcore and melding it with powerful themes of queer history and mental health with their new double release.

The first song, ‘In This Moment’, is reminiscent of the operatic alt rock that ruled the 2000s. It has raw and vulnerable emotional themes that are portrayed through not just the lyrics but also the sound. The song has shade and light throughout, all kicking in at the end with an epic crash of guitar and drums.

The second song ‘Section 28’ is an ode to those who suffered at the result of the 1988 Local Government act preventing the promotion of homosexuality in local communities and schools. The effects of the act exist to this day, and the song is much heavier in its sound in comparison to ‘In This Moment’ as a representation of anger. It does a fantastic job in expressing the frustration of those who ‘were left growing up in silence’, as the song says. It’s a permanent reminder that queer people have and will always exist, and a comforting extension of union for queer people everywhere who may be living in fear due to the current climate.

Ómoia have done a wonderful job of not only representing the queer community in the alternative scene, but putting their hearts on their sleeves with their emotive melodies and charged, powerful sound.
