Brighton-based noise punk band Lambrini Girls today release their much-awaited debut album Who Let The Dogs Out with City Slang Records, and it does not disappoint. This is our LOUD WOMEN #albumofthemonth
“You know how Fleetwood Mac almost dedicated Rumours to their cocaine dealer? I think we should dedicate this album to all the booze we bought at Tesco.” – Lambrini Girls
The duo of Phoebe Lunny (vocals/guitar) and Lilly Macieira (bass) was borne of pure unadulterated feminine rage and this album stays true to form as they rip through the fabric of institutional misogyny with lyrics you want to scream into the face of every boss you’ve ever had, and a truly filthy, relentless bass.
The album opens with a whirring police siren sound dissolving into an unrelenting high-tempo drum beat and bass line in the song ‘Bad Apple’. With Lunny’s angry slam poetry style vocal delivery, it is easy to draw comparisons to that of Kathleen Hanna, Amy Taylor and Patti Smith. This song – just like much of the rest of the album – is a high-impact call to action for marginalised people to start unapologetically pissing off the ones in charge who simply won’t let us live.
‘Company Culture‘, the first single from this album, deals with the subject of workplace sexual harassment which feels apt for me to be writing about since I got sexually harassed in the workplace just last week. The music video for this song is invigorating to watch as Lunny and Macieira can ultimately be seen smashing everything in their office to pieces with baseball bats, my fave lyrics from the song being:
“Pretend that I know how to use a computer
Harassed in the workplace
my cold resting bitch face
When will I learn that men just do it better?”
I think ‘No Homo’ claims my top spot for favourite track, a song about the absolute heteronormative paradox that I think all queer people in the dating world face of “Oh my God, what if the person that I’m flirting with realises that I’m flirting with them?!”. The song is witty, comedic and really really gay.
This record is Lambrini Girls at their noisiest, most thrashing, in-your-face and ultimately most Lambrini Girls yet so I’m sure you can see why I am happy to name Who Let The Dogs Out LOUD WOMEN’s Album of the Month.
