Chronicles of Manimal and Samara

The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara (TCOMAS) have just dropped their latest single, Waves‘, a track from their forthcoming album ORIGINS, set to release on 1 November.

This single, like its predecessors, demonstrates the duo’s unique approach to blending progressive rock, metal, poetry, and classical elements.

Waves’ opens with a simple repeating motif, creating a mood that unfolds with patience. In an era driven by social media’s instant gratification, TCOMAS let the song grow organically, giving it the space it needs to breathe.

Daphne Ang’s vocals are captivating—a blend of confidence and fragility that weaves beautifully through each part of the track. The song gradually adds new textures, introducing a spoken word section that features some delicate poetry, reminding me a little of The Courtesans.

After a brief moment of silence, the track takes an unexpected turn. Giant riffs crash in, and double kick pedals drive the song into metal territory. This transition is exhilarating, reminiscent of bands like GAUPA.

Just as you are swept up by the heaviness, the song eases back into lilting vocal lines, but this time followed by an off-beat guitar pattern and weird synth slide that guide us into it’s powerful conclusion, complete with death growls.

Accompanied by an official video produced by TCOMAS Studio, ‘Waves’ offers a multi-sensory experience —one that can shift from calm to chaos in an instant. According to Daphne Ang and Andrea Papi, this reflects the song’s core theme:

“the unpredictability of life, and how quickly we can transition from safety and comfort to peril without noticing.”

ORIGINS is due for release on 1 November, and TCOMAS are certainly a band to keep your eyes—and ears—on.
