MAN/WOMAN/CHAINSAW are angry and they’re not afraid to show it. The teenage London-based art-punk sextet have shared a new single ‘The Boss’ from their upcoming debut EP Easy Peazy, coming out on the 8 November on Fat Possum Records.
Their last year’s single ‘What Lucy Found There’ was a breakthrough and got them attention from BBC Radio 6 Music, NME and The Quietus. They have been ripping through the capital with their captivating live shows and for their upcoming debut EP they have collaborated with Daniel Fox of Gilla Band, who guided them through the process of marrying the pretty with the noisy.
‘The Boss’ is the heaviest track from the EP and tackles the ever relevant topic of gender power dynamics. Knowing how young the band is, the lyrics are incredibly mature, well crafted and full of zest. With a backdrop of heavy riffs and cinematic violin melodies, the lyrics come across as a beat poem and the song becomes an instant ear worm.
In the band’s own words:
“We wanted to express our frustration with imbalanced power dynamics in our everyday lives with a big supermassive rant of a rock song. In the writing process it began as a more standard punk tune until Emmie and Clio spontaneously improvised their interlocking violin/synth line that totally changed the direction of the song.“
He keeps me close enough
To all the men I trust
I have become like them
I’ve become like him
The single features additional two tracks: ‘Grow A Tongue In Time’, a ballad with a violin so wistful and full of longing, it reminds me of Dirty Three or For Breakfast, with another set of brilliant lyrical poetry:
They’ve got something
I thought we could have
Some kind of bullshit or some kind of love
I’d lay it on the line you’d lay up in my bed
Lovingly, comfortably
The third track, ‘Ode To Clio’, initially released in July of this year to instant critical acclaim, opens up gently to rip into a beautiful juxtaposition of classical violin instrumentation with intense punk riffs. The song is an actual ode to Clio Harwood, the band’s violinist whose melody carries the song, and the band reminisce of the writing process: “It took us a year to write and it’s a nonsensical collage of people and relationships we’ve encountered throughout that time – moving from serene to tumultuous, all held together by Clio’s overarching violin melody”.
