Sacramento rock quartet Destroy Boys has delivered a resonant and rowdy album in Funeral Soundtrack #4 via Hopeless Records, Inc.
“Looking back, our first three albums marked the deaths of things…They were soundtracks to our funerals, whether they were for our ages, our mental states. We’ve gone through a lot of changes as a band and as people.” – Destroy Boys guitarist, Violet Mayugba
An emboldening track of reclamation with all the charm of garage sound, ‘Bad Guy’ is one hell of an opener. Packing a wallop of a punch in under 3 minutes, this song is a cathartic jam and a call for vengeance. A flexible track perfect for headphones or a house party, ‘Bad Guy’ behaves so badly, that it’s glorious.
‘Amor Divino’ starts uncertain; craving a relationship that’s accepting, divine, and open just as displayed throughout nature and the cosmos. All the while, holding out hope that you can give a strong love in return this song doesn’t leave you hanging. By the end, the guitar’s crescendo leaves listeners with the hope that that kind of love may be possible. ‘Amor Divino’ is an amazing alt-rock track that embraces love and acknowledges our imperfections.
‘You Don’t Know’ is for anyone who has been reduced to a caricature of themselves. Exploring the battle of being denied nuance and their humanity, ‘You Don’t Know’ is a riot-grrrl descent into perseverance and recompense. This track feels like a strong hug while still baring its teeth.
A whirlwind of a patriarchal rap sheet, ‘You Hear Yes’ screams of the daily attacks women are subjugated to at the hands of men. The tired merry-go-round of being unsafe, disrespected, and a denial of autonomy, Destroy Boys confidently dives into it all with featured artists, Mannequin Pussy and Scowl. This unity in voice and message from these artists makes ‘You Hear Yes’ an even more persuasive and dynamic song. Standing in resistance together, this track also screams power and solidarity.
Funeral Soundtrack #4 sounds like quintessential Destroy Boys but even more unshakeable. It’s a gritty album where nothing remains hidden but also a tender and meaningful collection in all the right places. If you like music with struggle and purpose, this album will hold something for you.
