London wonk-folk-pop quartet Daisy & The Deadheads introduce us to their visionary sound through ‘Baby’, the lead single from forthcoming EP Butter Wouldn’t Melt, just announced for 7 June via Mango Wax Records.
“The ‘Baby’ in question isn’t that of a doo-wop teenage love affair, but the original, wailing-on-all-fours variety, with lyrics delving into the profound and often unspoken struggles surrounding fertility. We’ve used a big danceable sound to transport an emotionally complex story. A vulnerable yet empowered reflection of my own
experiences. ‘Baby’ is an attempt to grapple with the difficult reality of this often untold story and the roles expected of women, even today.” – Daisy Tortuga
Brought to us with casual, light pop energy garnered from the twang of Callum McHugh’s guitar, and the steady thrum of Olive Ashford’s bass; the passionate release is hard to ignore, and delightfully harder to get out of your head. Charlie Ratcliffe’s drums and backing vocals pull the track together, in harmony with Tortuga’s delicate feminine vocals.
The vulnerability of her experience laid bare, yet empowered, for both new and old listeners of the band’s gentle punk vibe. The influences of The Moldy Peaches and ESG are evident within Daisy and the Deadheads’ sound, opening them up for a wide range of fans. The singles’ upbeat tones really push forth Daisy Tortuga’s experience as a headliner of gigs within the capital, allowing for the imagination to run rampant on how entertaining Daisy & The Deadheads gigs will be.
Catch their launch show at the Brixton Windmill on 11 June
