Tolü Makay

Tolü Makay has a soulful voice that slinks at you from behind and drags you forward into her heartache. A singer songwriter with a proud Nigerian-Irish immigrant background, Tolü has used music as a way for her to make sense of her emotions since she first started singing. Her latest single ‘Mind & Body’ is out now.

A release two years in the making, Tolü’s ‘Mind & Body’ explores the physical disconnect between thought and feeling that anxiety can cause. When Tolü reflects on the deeper meaning and call to action she hopes listeners get from her song she says, “In this cultural moment we are so concerned and cornered by our thoughts, our appearance, our voices and narratives that we tell ourselves. It is so hard to simply just be. ‘Mind & Body’ is a reminder to be present. To come together. Not just with yourself, but with each other.”

“Heavy is the head wearing a crown to sleep, not very stable how have you been able to get out, want to feel everything.”

Lyrics from ‘Mind & Body’

From start to finish, ‘Mind & Body’ uses otherworldly electronic pop beats to take listeners on a journey that begins with the claustrophobia of trapped thoughts and ends with a crescendo evoking flying freedom. Tolü’s emotive delivery is reminiscent of vocal powerhouses Amy Winehouse and Nina Simone.
