Megan Black released Full Circle Part 1 on the 29 September, an EP of empowerment and solidarity.

The opening track ‘MOTHER. SISTER. LOVER’ celebrates female companionship while ‘Me Vs Mother Nature’ is a melancholic cry at the state of the environment. The concerns are personified, mixed with individual experiences, for example

But I can’t bloom / The way you do / I’m poison / Dead at the root / So maybe I’ll just be your observer / Because Mother knows that I could / Never serve her,’

thus poetically addressing disappointment and change rather than being outright political.

On the other hand, there are also the songs with chugging guitars and groove-induced anger which follow the style of the album Deadly is the Women released last year.

‘Just For Fun’ finds liberation in our flaws and explores the self-destructive tendencies that can come from relations with others. As Black sings authoritatively,

But I’ll find comfort in my own pain / And freedom in the mess I made / Breathe me in / I’m kinda strange / And I do it all / Just for Fun.’

‘Fuck You (You Stole My Youth)’ has sensual and edgy undertones but the lyrics address sexual assault and dealing with traumatic incidences as the years go by.

I need to stand for something / Speak for something

Black exclaims in the song, emphasizing her motifs behind creating music.

Full Circle Part 1 is part of a larger project with more music from the Scottish artist to be released next year.
