Edinburgh-based artist Megan Black has released ‘Mother. Sister. Lover,’ an easy-going feminist anthem infused with a hint of 70s’ rock.

The song emphasises the power of solidarity and how women can be a much more powerful force if working together as opposed to competing against each other.

“We’re taught from a very young age that women should compete with one another – you have to be prettier, smarter, funnier, more talented,” Black explains. “I wanted to use this song to spread the message that we don’t need to fight against each other. The women in my life bring me more strength, wisdom, and love than I could ever begin to describe. There is so much power in us coming together.”

‘Mother. Sister. Lover,’ is the first of new material following the artist’s 2022 debut album Deadly is the Woman, a self-assured exploration of queerness and societal concerns such as mental health and addiction. While Deadly is the Woman has a notably bluesy rock sound, ‘Mother. Sister. Lover,’ takes on a dreamier retro approach by channelling the feel-good community spirit like that of females connecting amongst nature. “You don’t have to identify as a woman to know the power of womanhood and feel part of it,” Black adds in regard to the song. “This is not an attack, it’s a wake-up call.”
