We start the week with a new Katie MF single called ‘Set It Alight’. As she described it herself, this song is her « cathartic love letter to the DIY punk community and music in general » and she gives it her all. The naked guitar that starts us off, the shift in tempo, and the lyrics going from vulnerable to ecstatic – it’s all there!

‘Set It Alight’ is a song that has accompanied Katie’s concerts since 2019. She played it for the first time in a gig with Frank Turner and has since been a work in progress shared with her public. That’s saying something. Joining her on the record we have Tobias Alexander in the drums, Nick Harris in production, and a whole choir of backing voices taken from some of her concerts.

This is for anyone who’s felt the need to hide

For all of us who’ve struggled, oh, to stay alive

And found all our meaning in three chords and favourite lines

It’s all been done before, but that’s alright – let’s take everything we have and set it alight

The thing with this band is that you get the softness and the self-reflection, but you also get the in-your-face attitude and, in the end, your own silver lining. In this case, a silver lining made of Katie’s greatest nights of music and excitement.

Honestly, I am dreaming of hearing it live. And you can:

Nov 18 at Signature Brew Haggerston with China Drum, Sam Russo and more.
