Staytus

There is something magnetic and slightly dangerous about Secret Hand: a mechanical groove, a voice moving between desire and menace, and a production that keeps winding up the tension instead of going for the obvious hit.

Staytus sits somewhere between industrial and dark alternative rock here, with distorted bass pushed right to the front, abrasive guitars and gritty but tightly controlled electronics. The rhythm section moves like a cat stalking its prey, taking its time and pulling you in. There’s a touch of the sensual pulse of Garbage’s “Temptation Waits”, while Snake River Conspiracy also comes to mind in that mix of detachment, aggression and provocation. Staytus sounds a little rougher around the edges and more restless, and the song is better for it.

“‘Secret Hand’ has some of my favorite guitar and bass work I’ve done. I wanted the music to feel just as seductive as it is dangerous—something that pulls you in before you realize how intense it has become. The video gave me the opportunity to fully embody that energy and step into this fearless, unapologetic version of myself as an artist.” Staytus.

Sam Grundemann, the artist behind Staytus, keeps shifting between vulnerability, sarcasm and menace, and that push and pull gives the song much of its tension. The lyrics move through desire, doubt and the urge to throw yourself into something even when you know it could end badly. Sex becomes an escape, attraction starts to blur into danger, and intimacy only seems real when everything is close to slipping out of control.

Directed by Vicente Cordero, the video keeps things simple: blue and red lighting, leather, sharp gestures and Staytus enclosed in a neon capsule that works as both stage and cage. It stays firmly within industrial’s visual language, but it fits the song’s tension and sensuality perfectly.

Secret Hand leaves a strong impression and, more importantly, makes you want to know what Staytus is going to do next.
