Glasgow five-piece SISTER MADDS have announced their debut EP, Are You Hungry?, out 27 February, with their vibrant new single ‘Table Manners’ which is a sharp, sarcasm-laced single that establishes them as one of Scotland’s most exciting emerging acts.

The song uses the dinner party as an extended metaphor for emotional greed and is delivered with real wit. The precise and cutting image of a character who devours ‘everything (a side dish, dessert) before rushing off with an upset stomach, leaving the protagonist to clean up the ‘crumbs’ while being told to ‘stop hurting’, transforms the language of dining etiquette into a criticism of the selfish lover who takes everything and still expects sympathy. The writing has a Kate Clover-like clarity: superficially casual, but quietly brutal underneath.

“Table Manners’ is a tongue-in-cheek tune that uses the idea of food etiquette as a metaphor to talk about modern day relationships. It’s a witty take on modern-day online dating. More and more, there’s a growing lack of humanity in the dating world, and people have endless ‘options,’ which makes the environment pretty hard to navigate. This song doesn’t hold back, calling out bad manners in the world of love and saying what we really think.”

Musically, ‘Table Manners’ is built on tension and release, the quiet-loud dynamic that Wolf Alice have made their own, but Sister Madds give it a glam-edged punch that is distinctly their own. The guitars hit hard, the rhythm section is lean and purposeful, and Maddie Cassidy leads with a charismatic, melody-first boldness that, while not sounding like No Doubt, recalls them at their most confident. Dream Wife’s fearless punk energy and the playful, colloquial irreverence that Wet Leg have brought back into fashion are also in the DNA.

Produced by Jamie Holmes, the track is tight, propulsive and refreshingly self-aware. It’s fun without being meaningless, and fierce without losing its pop instincts. With their chaotic live shows and fast growth on the UK festival circuit, SISTER MADDS feel less like a band on the rise and more like one already arrived.
