A LOUD WOMEN Spotlight Interview with Minneapolis noise rock band, In Lieu.
Who is answering these questions?
Nikii Post
How did you choose your band name?
In Lieu, or “instead”. I used to bond with my father over guitar but he passed away so this band is what I have “instead”.
Who’s in the band, and what do you all play?
Nikii Post – vox/guitar
Mano Holgin – drums
Kyle Adams – Vox/guitar
Sam Claeys – Bass
Where do you call home (geographically and musically)?
Minneapolis, MN
Describe your sound in three words:
Noisy scream-y nonsense
Tell us about your latest release — what’s it about, and why should we all turn it up loud?
This album [Hooligan, out 24 Oct] is a compilation of fight songs against humans who abuse their power.
What’s your local scene like — and how do you fit in, or stir it up?
Minneapolis has a deeply passionate rock music scene. We’ve bounced around between scenes as our sound developed but found that we fit in with the noise rock and punk crowds best.
If you could rip up the rulebook of the music industry, what’s the first thing you’d rewrite?
Bands having to make TikTok videos.
What’s the wildest/strangest thing that’s ever happened at one of your gigs?
While opening for Highly Suspect in Fargo, one of our amps caught fire from a faulty powerstrip during the last note of our last song.
What’s the story behind a song of yours that fans really connect with?
Our new song ‘Godfucker’ is actually an ode to Bonnie and Clyde!
Have you ever written a lyric that came from an unlikely place?
Our song ‘How Much’ was originally a romantic song but after realizing we’re allergic to happiness, it turned into a song about how hard it is to write songs.
What’s the biggest hurdle you’ve faced and how did you overcome it?
Finding the right band members that you can truly feel like a unit with. This band is 9 years old and didnt quite feel “real” until this last album/current lineup.
What’s the proudest moment you’ve had so far as a band/artist?
This upcoming album, Hooligan, I think we all agree is the best thing we’ve done and we’re insanely proud of it.
What’s the strangest gig you’ve ever played?
We once played a comedy club called the Jizz Oasis. Then we slept on their floor while Gremlins played on a TV in the corner.
What’s a dream gig or collaboration you must make happen before you die?
We’d love to play a big festival at some point and get to walk around and meet other artists all day.
Dream lineup: you + three other acts (alive, dead, or imaginary). Who’s on the bill?
Chat Pile, Melvins, and The Hex Girls from Scooby-doo and the Witch’s Ghost.
What’s next for you — gigs, releases, tour etc?
We release Hooligan on Oct 24th and the following weekend is our release show at Mortimers on November 1st with some or absolute favorite locals – Birth Order, Shrive, and Scrunchies!
