Cultivating an inspiration drawing from Maltese and Ghanaian heritage for their next album, Brighton-based ĠENN‘s latest single ‘Calypso’ presents a lineal offering of mythic proportions through true alt-rock artistry and psychedelic undertones via Liminal Collective.

As if channeling the essence of the ancient nymph’s tale, whispered spoken-word vocals speak of anguish and complicated perspectives. The steady rock accompaniment and floating saxophone entrance even further with their rhythms, enhancing the already cryptic and spellbinding nature of the lyrics.

This track is so gracefully written, that it grabbed me like a play unfolding before my eyes. Created in honor of a beloved author and titled after a maternal island, the ancestral layers run abound in ‘Calypso’ and the feeling of sacredness it manifests is striking.  ĠENN has also submitted a phenomenal retelling of Calypso that’s true to the tale and carried out successfully in the band’s distinctive style. I highly recommend this song to poetry lovers or anyone in need of some story-driven escapism.

ĠENN are currently working on their new album unum, due for full release on October 6th, and traveling for their UK tour. Make sure to check the dates for a show near you and mark your calendars for October.
