Chicago-based queer power pop band Pinksqueeze announce their signing to Skeletal Lightning and share the video for ‘Springtime’, from their upcoming album We Can Have It, out this Friday, 23 October.
Reflective and driven by Midwest emo hooks, ‘Springtime’ sets the tone for the album with the brightness and hope that come with the changing seasons.
Pinksqueeze share:
“A total solar eclipse, queer love, and taking a cue from the changes in nature – “Springtime” opens this album grounded in hope and new beginnings. “Everyone deserves the love that brings out their best, and so do you” are lyrics that are meant to uplift listeners. While this song focuses more on interpersonal relationships, it sets the stage for the larger theme of the album, that we all deserve a better world. When I (April) wrote this song, I was coming out of some months of depression related to love and what I felt like I and my loved ones deserved. Previously, springtime had been very challenging for me, due to associations with the death of a friend in the spring when I was younger, but suddenly I was finding the changing season to be a comfort for the first time in my adult life, and was also celebrating the love in my life. The lyrics of the hook felt like a universal truth I felt compelled to share, that I really wanted people to hear, and the song flowed from there. As a nod to my younger self and healing my inner child, this song features a string arrangement at the end of the song played on viola by me. While the whole band wasn’t initially sold on strings for this song or this album in general, our sound engineer Simon was very supportive of my vision to add strings here, and made sure to help me bring that vision to life.”
