Nottingham’s Planet Cake couldn’t care less about musical boundaries. Their world takes in rock ’n’ roll, punk and funk, alongside influences from their Indian, Egyptian and Celtic roots. On MF Mini, they’ve let rip with a brutal blast of funk and a punk attitude to die for. A proper banger that’ll get you shaking your arse and having a bloody good time.
Imagine Chic’s “Le Freak”, only rowdier and with zero glamour. The bass does its own thing, all bouncy and playful, the guitars throw in offbeat chords and the drums lay down a groove you can’t resist. And it all fits together like clockwork. Over the top comes a cheeky voice with an unmistakably British accent, switching between singing and rattling off her lines at full speed, as if the rules were none of her business.
The lyrics are hilarious. The singer boasts about her second-hand red Mini, christened Flame, which cost her next to nothing and has her bandmates green with envy. It’s a little epic on wheels, told with plenty of swearing, cheeky humour and a whole lot of nerve.
It’s impossible not to think of Ian Dury & The Blockheads. If Dury had owned that Mini, he’d surely have written a song about it. But the keys belong to Planet Cake, who turn something as daft as buying a car into a street-funk party full of punk swagger.
So fasten your seatbelt, crank up the volume and get those hips ready, because this Mini has no brakes and is heading straight for the dancefloor.
