UCHE YARA, in her quest for connection over instant gratification, channels her body into sonic textures designed to capture instead of overstimulate. Here, she manages to use dark, primal soundscapes to make you feel lost enough in the strobe lights to let your body lead you uninhibited.
‘BODYSCANNER’ is magnetic and ominous. This song as an opening is a show of strength. Its electronic elements hit the eardrums like a power saw in the distance just as you feel the texture of her distorted, staticky guitar. This is a title track that tells the listener, “Enter— if you dare.”
‘be something’ captivates like an ancestral chant. Her voice is firm, husky, and low while the percussion is a slow and steady pulse. There is a shadowy sensuality here that feels personal and persistent. All while the lyrics spell out the unfortunate compulsivity of the times.
My approach moves away from the digital, hyper-stimulated, show-off realm that chases one dopamine hit and one drop after another at high speed,” UCHE shares. “I’m much more interested in connection rather than consumption.”
