Summer’s here, and with it comes that familiar panic, terror and general sense of dread that kicks in when it’s time to put on a bikini. Or maybe not. But if you’re one of those people who panic, turn up the volume and let TWAT UNION’s new single, TV BIKINY, remind you in no uncertain terms: if you feel like wearing a bikini to the beach, the pool or even just on the sofa in front of the telly, then wear the bloody bikini!

The cheeky London band specialising in feral feminist theatre-punk are back doing what they do best: empowering people through humour, realism and an “I couldn’t care less” attitude that feels like a small but gloriously silly punk rebellion. TV BIKINY isn’t so much about loving your body as taking five minutes off from thinking about it. It’s about being hairy, sweaty and covered in panini crumbs while watching trash telly, without feeling the need to apologise for taking up space.

“It’s also poking at that weird gap between how comfy we feel in our bodies when we’re lounging around at home versus when we have to take those same bodies out into the world. We want everyone to smuggle a bit of that sofa confidence into real life.” (Kate Mac)

The track fuses pop-punk, dance-punk and garage rock into a direct, rhythmic and highly catchy sound. The instrumentation works like a groove machine, with Kate Mac delivering a provocative, theatrical performance full of Peaches-style electro-punk swagger. Built around the spelling of “B-I-K-I-N-Y”, the chorus leans on repetition, cheek and a chant-like hook reminiscent of The Ting Tings’ “That’s Not My Name”.

The video seals the deal, swapping the sun-kissed glamour of summer pop for a domestic, DIY and gloriously ridiculous fantasy. So there you have it: less bikini-body panic, more sofa, panini and volume cranked up to eleven.
