New York City posse partygirl is serving up another maximalist masterpiece with new single ‘New Orleans’, out on Vengeful, Baby! Records. This tune layers and loops excitingly erratic elements as it morphs into something bigger, tougher, and more complex.
The six-piece starts off with a bustling jazz moment that slowly takes on more texture and blooms. Then, they whip you over to a gritty funky place built by Pagona Kytzidis‘ awe-inspiring vocals that shoot from Cruella de Vil to Betty Davis and back. By the end, you have been dropped off in the chaos of punk and you want to ride the roller coaster again.
‘New Orleans’ came together in two parts: one, the hazy, surrealistic prism of memory, and second: how what once was nothing, can, for the worst, turn into something. Think: Hurricanes at 2PM, Palmetto bugs clinging to leg pants, cigarette vending machines, and friends, talking talking talking looking to hash it out, and landing on empty.“

Typically, you can count on partygirl for an intentionally directed, full production music video. The video for ‘New Orleans’ is not as aesthetically driven as others.
The point here is to focus on producer and guitarist Francesca Pastore, drummer Jonathan Ashley, violinist Claire Lin Jenkins, bassist Andrew Jordan, and saxophonist Jenna Love. The physicality of Pagona’s delivery, and her casual switch from keys to the mic, is an impressive flex as well.
Layered and caffeinated in feel, this performance is like a Russian doll set of sonic flavors worth savoring— just like The Crescent City.
