With just over a month until the release of their debut album I Wanna Know If It’s Real and with their festival performances and tour announcement rightly having fans chomping at the bit for more, hyperpop/industrial metal Lake Malice have dropped their latest single ‘Chrome Red’ to great acclaim, the penultimate track release before the album to tide over their ever-expanding fanbase.
Taking inspiration from singer Alice‘s real life experiences and the popular manga and anime that’s fuelled so much of their sound, ‘Chrome Red’ explores the feeling of being in a one-sided relationship and how walking away cuts less than staying in the relationship, wrapped in new-wave industrial rock with pop elements. Alice shares:
“‘Chrome Red’ is about the breaking point of one-sided friendships and the cost of unchecked individualism. It explores the moment you realise someone has been taking more than they’ve ever given, and that sometimes the strongest thing you can do is walk away.“
Full of dramatic synths and a pounding drumbeat, ‘Chrome Red’ sees Alice shift from softer, reflective tones to defiant shouts, with guitarist and other founding member Blake Cornwall slamming in with guitar hooks that build the emotion of the track. Released with a music video clearly inspired by cinematic anime, the backdrop of jagged glass crystals entwined with vines and flowers in an apocalyptic wasteland feels like a visual metaphor for the toxic friendship, the bitter, sharpened edges set to wound and wear you down hidden under a false sense of beauty and innocence, before shattering the illusion and creating a new landscape.
