South London songwriter and producer Alice Barlow pairs woozy guitars with a restless, propelling rhythm on new single ‘Behind’. It is about the urge to escape everything difficult by going somewhere else, followed by the annoying discovery that your feelings have packed too.
“‘Behind’ is about trying to escape yourself, the impulse to go anywhere to leave behind the difficult stuff, but the reality that those feelings will persist wherever you go, until you face them.”
Barlow’s voice sounds caught between determination and exhaustion as she repeats, “And I try / To forget / This moment / Bury it”. Largely self-produced, with additional production from Dilip Harris, ‘Behind’ keeps moving even as its narrator remains stuck. Sometimes the only way out is, irritatingly, through.
