Liars at the Witch Trial

Liars at the Witch Trial are a Birmingham-based duo formed by Kate Walton and Adam Wakefield. Blending garage rock, blues, post-punk and grunge, they prove that two musicians can generate the force and presence of a full band. Following Torches and Steel Mill Sessions, “Gritted Teeth” stays true to the raw, intense rock that defines them, while adding a glam-goth edge that suits them remarkably well.

The song pulls you in from the start through the dark, infectious interplay between voice and guitar. There is a hint of Queens of the Stone Age in the way the riff moves: dry, heavy and full of groove. Liars at the Witch Trial, however, drag it into rougher punk-blues territory, making it darker, dirtier and more underground. The guitars are wide and loaded with fuzz, while the drums push the song forward with a relentless, almost processional drive.

Over that backdrop, Kate Walton’s voice does the real damage. Her performance is explosive, theatrical and provocative, charged with glam-punk attitude. There is something grunge-like in the way she attacks each line, but also a darker, more dramatic quality that recalls Siouxsie Sioux — an influence Walton has acknowledged herself — and occasionally approaches the intensity of Jehnny Beth in Savages.

The song explores the conflict between who you are and who everyone else expects you to be. A smile through gritted teeth, clothes that never quite fit, shoes that will never truly be yours: each image points to the same sense of discomfort, of being trapped in somebody else’s role and pretending everything is fine so as not to disappoint anyone. Beneath its apparent simplicity, the song becomes a bitter reflection on people-pleasing and on the struggle to resist becoming a tamed version of yourself.

Best of all, that frustration never settles into self-pity; it becomes fuel. The result is direct, magnetic and full of attitude. “Gritted Teeth” may draw you in with its riff, but it is the combination of darkness, audacity and theatricality that keeps you hooked.
