Northern Irish duo Dea Matrona release a self written, recorded and produced album Hate that I Care – a subliminal message on being more comfortable with who you are. The album mixes shoegaze vocals with electric sounds that scream for independence whilst still being soft enough to give you space to reflect on your own story.
The title track “Hate That I Care” is a powerful beginning to this album. A song about acknowledging that you can care about something even when its exhausting. Out of the 10 songs on this album this is the one I connected to the most, maybe because the the pop chorus is very catchy, but also because I have too felt the exhaustion that comes with caring deeply.
“When we weren’t touring, I fell into a nocturnal routine and became disconnected from many of
the people I care about. ‘Hate That I Care’ (the title track) is written to myself rather than anyone else, capturing the exhaustion that comes from masking emotions and trying to be present in a way that feels genuine.” – Mollie
The rest of the album follows similar pattern of exposing who Orláith Forsythe and Mollie McGinn truly are in a raw, loud and energising way. Making this in to an album in which you are guaranteed to find something to connect to. With songs like “John Doe” which remind you that as people we follow certain patterns which are responsible for the type of people we become and keep around us. And “Magic Spell” that identifies the power that comes with being so admired that you can get away with anything.
As you reflect on the impact of the songs to yourself, the band reflected on their album and said:
“People have always tried to assume who we are; both musically and personally. Our second
album ‘Hate That I Care’ is a response to that: it’s more personal, more honest, and more aware
of the world around us than anything we’ve made before. It reflects a pressure to show up
louder than we naturally are and a feeling of not really fitting in. Making this album made us
realise how similarly we deal with things by turning inward, keeping busy, and processing all our
feelings through writing songs that embrace our own values.” – Orláith
