Teen Idle, the “one-woman-band” out of New Jersey, fronted by instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Sara Abdelbarry has released her sophomore album. A Heart So Tender, is an ambitious follow-up to Abdelbarry’s 2023 debut album, Nonfiction. Sonically, this album maintains her signature blend of dream-pop and shoegaze while introducing an even more polished production through a collaboration with co-producer Matteo DeBenedetti.
Driven by singles like ‘California Cowboy,’ ‘Vampires,’ and ‘Infinite Sea,’ this record explores deep themes of escapism, longing, and unrequited love. All three tracks were standout tracks for me. ‘California Cowboy’ carries a nostalgic, hazy atmosphere that contrasts the Golden State atmosphere imagery of the title with a more grounded, introspective sound. While ‘California Cowboy’ brings a bit more grit, ‘Infinite Sea’ highlights Abdelbarry’s ability to create a cinematic listening experience. There’s a vulnerability about this track, touching on themes of surrender and finding peace in uncertainty. With layered textures and ethereal vocals, ‘Infinite Sea’ is an atmospheric, immersive masterpiece.

The driving bassline and eerie, shimmering guitar work feels distinctly late October. The music video, directed and edited by Abdelbarry herself, captures the North East autumn mood with moonlit skies and DIY horror aesthetics that perfectly match the song’s spooky yet vulnerable energy.
A Heart So Tender is a hauntingly beautiful evolution for Teen Idle, trademarking a sound that feels as vast as an ocean and as intimate as a secret. It is a record that doesn’t just ask to be heard, but to be felt, cementing Abdelbarry as a vital voice for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider looking in.
