Freya Beer at The Bread and Roses – photo by Dani Tagen

When I arrived at The Bread and Roses – a pub with a social ethos owned by The Battersea and Wandsworth Trade Union Council (BWTUC) – the stage was set and a good crowd filling the room. Good LOUD WOMEN vibes resonating already.

Where We Sleep kicked us off with a super cool performance. Her sound reminded me of a mix of PJ Harvey and Eurythmics – I could defo hear ‘Sweet Dreams’ in Beth Rettig’s vocals sometimes – and the coolness of Beth Gibbons. The lyrics were deep and personal, sang with a lot of contained emotion, which matched perfectly the tunes and the bass lines.

Dubais literally let everything loose. Dubais – aka Nadia Buyse – moved so much that I couldn’t use autofocus on my camera, I had to shoot most of the set on manual! An undefinable music genre which makes me very happy to acknowledge as it can be quite dull to label music and bands sometimes. She presented a mix of cabaret, dadaism and cat-loving indulgence blended in a unique experience.

Freya Beer had a gothic post-punk ethereal sound infused by pop Blondie-style riffs. I felt I could be in a David Lynch film: a mix of Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet. A fab end to the evening.

Another great LOUD WOMEN gig, another great night!
