Sydney-born, LA-based musician YAGKI returns with her new single, ‘Charcoal’, a haunting exploration of the overdose that left her in a coma at just three years old. Inspired by the medical records from the night of her hospital admission, the past resurfaces in black-and-white ink as she processes trauma through her signature personal songwriting.

‘Charcoal’ is built on a gritty alternative rock foundation and a haunting dark-pop soundscape, a place where memory, guilt, and survival collide. YAGKI shares the following:

“‘Charcoal’ is about me swallowing 5 ecstasy tablets at 3 years old while in my mothers care, and falling into a coma. It was inspired by the medical records I retrieved from when I was first brought into hospital, and reading their extremely graphic details. One of the first things that stood out was that ‘Charcoal’ was given to me to help try and get the tablets out of my system.”

“Even though the records were mine – with my name, birthdate, parent’s names – I felt so far away from the story. I had so much guilt for the younger version of me that had to go through it and I feel guilty because I don’t remember anything of it”.
