A spotlight interview with Marta and Ronja of St. Pauli band Matrone, ahead of their appearance at LOUD WOMEN Fest Hamburg on 28 February.
Who’s in the band, and what do you all play?
Ronja, drums and percussion, samples Marta, vox, guitar, loop station
Describe your sound in three words.
dirty, free, unusual
Tell us about your music
From the Heart was released in 2025. The songs were written during the lockdown, and that’s what it sounds like. Making and playing these songs we let it all out and want you to join us doing so…
‘Spiders’ is about accepting fear as life companion. It seems like we are not the only ones dealing with this.
What’s your local scene like — and how do you fit in, or stir it up?
We don’t really fit anywhere and feel comfortable with all of them (as long as there is no sexism, racism and so on…)
If you could rip up the rulebook of the music industry, what’s the first thing you’d rewrite?
We would like to burn down all the genre-boxes and let all musicians go free.
What’s the wildest/strangest thing that’s ever happened at one of your gigs?
All our gigs are wild and strange…somehow haha
What’s the biggest hurdle you’ve faced and how did you overcome it?
Coming from the punk scene and breaking all the rules. We just keep on going and find free minds. After the years, they are enough to support us.
What’s the proudest moment you’ve had so far as a band?
Everytime somebody comes to us, to tell us that they really connect with us and our music.
What’s the strangest gig you’ve ever played?
Show on the MS Stubnitz during the pandemic. It was really nice to play live again, but it was really scary that nobody could get close to us…they streamed it, so it was somehow getting to the people. At that point, nobody knew when we would be able to play live again.
What’s a dream gig or collaboration you must make happen before you die?
Marta: Playing with Alice Cooper. Also going on tour in Spain, Japan, and everywhere else where they want us to be.
Ronja: Touring in Japan, Spain, France, Canada, … not with Alice Cooper 😉
Dream lineup: you + three other acts (alive, dead, or imaginary). Who’s on the bill?
Die Spitz, Laura Jane Grace, Mia Zapata (The Gits)
What’s next for you?
LOUD WOMEN Fest, Touring Germany in May, Femme Rebellion Fest Neumünster, …
