With catchy hooks and ethereal vocals, Hana Piranha’s new single ‘Valentine’ pierces deeper than Cupid’s arrow. Ahead of their EP release Heart of Darkness, ‘Valentine’ opens with a cinematic synth-wave reminiscent of 80s cinema, before plunging into indie-funk.

Hana Piranha – originally from Wellington, New Zealand before moving to England at 12 – overlays her understated vocals to create a haunting, dual effect, as if a couple are singing ‘Valentine’ to each other. Hana isn’t overpowering with her sound, but her lyrics cut deep with a tale as old as time, seeing an entire love story play out and then crash out from the first meeting.

The chorus is short but not sweet, with a breathy, yearning feel to it, overlaid with operatic backing vocals on the final chorus. Guitarist Jim Beck adds sensuality throughout with intricate riffs and an unexpected run on the break, while Mishkin Fitzgerald’s melodic bassline and Andrew Lane’s steady drum beat tempo together perfectly, sounding like a racing heartbeat.

It’s a story you feel in your soul and a beat you would feel in your stomach when heard live.
