North West London singer Reem Mitten is done with wishful thinking. Instead, she is raising clear-headed questions about her future, and her new song ‘Celebrations‘ out today, captures this spirit. The song kicks off with pulsing percussion that builds over piano as the song progresses. It’s a combo that carries a bittersweet tinge throughout the song; it’s both a melancholy yearning and an invitation to dance your longing away.
From beginning to end, her vocals are authoritative and honest, with the catchiest melody lifting the clear-eyed lyrics of her chorus:
And as we’re ripping each other apart / Will I ever know happy? / When we’re living through the thick and thin of it all / Will I ever find happy?
Her vibrato, as she repeat-chants forever ever for is hypnotic, especially near the end of the song, when she layers it over more haunting vocals.
About her latest single, Reem Mitten says:
‘Celebrations’ is about being rushed to grow up too quickly as a young woman, the push and pull of finding happiness during that change. Having to let go of childlike wonder, and learning to see the world once the rose-tinted glasses come off.
Ultimately, it’s an intent to capture the dizzying rumination of a youth shedding her youth. This one will be on repeat for sure.
