Oakland-based experimental folk artist Maria BC has released a familiar ode to the past in her latest single, ‘Marathon’ via Sacred Bones.

As ‘Marathon’ opens, clamorous guitar reverb crashes over you as muddled, gentle vocals reminisce of home and the motion of time. Tangible and cutting, ‘Marathon’ sings an ode to nostalgia while being trapped in the present. Heart-wrenching and healing, this track is the walk back from memory lane, caked in mud and looking for the light.

There was a Marathon gas station at the end of the street I lived on as a kid. Its big, glowing sign was a landmark for me – when I could see it from the window of my mom’s car, I knew we were about to be home. Its iconic ‘M’ – on the rare occasion I encounter one these days – still brings up that old feeling, the familiarity of homecoming, and a twinge of nostalgia.”
