Brighton band Flip Top Head share new single ‘What I Really Want To Know’, via Blitzcat Records.
‘What I Really Want To Know’ hails Flip Top Head onto the mantelpiece of the new U.K Art Rock movement spearheaded by ambitious acts like Man/Woman/Chainsaw, Otala and The Orchestra For Now. Meanwhile providing something a bit different to the scene, with their melancholic lyrics.
On first listen to ‘What I Really Want To Know’ you can tell why the six-piece are on the rise. With shows at The Great Escape this year, and tour dates booked with Truthpaste and Dog Race, Flip Top Head walk a delicate line between experimental and trailblazing with the attainable and melodic. The result is music that feels fresh and exciting but still gives an earworm for the masses.
Lead vocalist Bowie Bartlett shares the following about ‘What I Really Want To Know’:
“It’s an old trauma dump poem, masked with heightened happiness. Taken from an almost embarrassingly long journal entry dating back to 3rd September 2022, the words had always felt too personal and far too harrowing to bring into the band. But, after a year or so of writing them – it felt cathartic to place some of the (less intense) lines into what unexpectedly turned into a (flip top) pop song.”
This use of a re-vamped journal entry works in Flip Top Head’s favour, as the lyrics are gut-punching in their specificities. Lines like “I want to know whether you would’ve had a 50th party” and “I want to know what colour suit you would wear when you get married,” feel achingly familiar.
