Brooklyn-based alt-indie pop artist JULESY releases her debut full-length album, Flip the Bed.
The album title is inspired by JULESY’s ritual of rearranging her bed to shift something within herself.
“I was either trying to change my perspective, understand someone else’s, or being forced into a new one.”
JULESY
Flip the Bed captures the end of a six-year relationship and its aftermath, set against the backdrop of a constantly evolving mid-twenties identity — with or without heartbreak. JULESY flips and rearranges her emotions track to track with her rich confessional songwriting.
Cinematic focus track ‘Water’ pulls you in like a wave, diving into the heavy topic of self-erasure in relationships.
“This was one of the last songs written for the record. Hejira by Joni Mitchell was a huge inspiration, more notably Jaco on bass. That bass sound is so round and full, but also so fragile because of the imperfectness of a fretless. That’s what I really wanted to nail for this song, a tenderness met with this sort of harsh depth, and Sahil really helped me bring that to life (big props to Julian Briones and Andy Shimm for nailing that vibe).

We played around with so many sounds until we found ones that sounded really perfect for the soul of the song. In the end, the instrumentation became so important to me, I decided to leave the third verse open to showcase that. The lyrics that I did include are about wanting to be enough for someone, and eventually realizing that you never could be. At the end of the day, transforming yourself can seem like the easier option, but it leaves you exhausted and pretty alone.”
With Flip the Bed , JULESY captures the complexities of heartbreak, identity, and finding your voice through the messiness of life.
