Leeds’ Bug Teeth announce debut album Micrographia, out 21 November and share new single ‘Warp & Weft II’.
Bug Teeth was founded by PJ Johnson (vocals, synth) and is now joined by Sonny Mitchell (guitar, cello), George Orton (drums, sampler), Alex Calder (synthesis) and Adam Bentham (bass).
Micrographia is named after the 17th century scientific work by Robert Hooke which led the way of microscopy and its use on insects and plants. And like its namesake, Micrographia uses intense focus on the smaller things of life, every detail exposed.
When their mother passed in 2021, PJ Johnson was left questioning how to cope with and heal after such a sudden loss.
”’Warp & Weft II’, initially written in two parts, breaks down another perspective of my grief and sudden loss. Looking back on memories of my mum, I find myself rewriting them, more so as time passes – it’s easier and more comfortable to remember us being closer, and to try to forget any difficult moments we had. Through the song, I wonder if this is an honest perspective. I’m still not sure if this view has changed our relationship entirely.

During the recording process, the entire band sung the last refrain together – a moment that stands out from the whole album. It shows the collaborative nature of Bug Teeth as a full band, rather than my solo project, and exemplifies how my bandmates support me through grief.”
