Exeter-based artist Moya Silk returns with her bold second EP, Posing Like Auteurs, released via her own grassroots label, Grotbag Records. Capturing the essence of everyday life, this five-song collection dives into the ups and downs of early adulthood — from moving cities and forging new friendships to navigating emotional turbulence with loved ones.

Refreshingly emotionally diverse, the EP steers clear of fixating on the often-trodden ground of romantic heartbreak, but explores the various struggles and joys woven into this foundational period.

Written over a span of two years, Posing Like Auteurs showcases the growth of vocalist and guitarist Jaz Pearce. What began as a solo bedroom project has now flourished into a full-band affair though, it still holds echoes of its humble beginnings with stripped-back production and raw vocals.

When defining her own sound, Pearce comments:

‘’When I started writing as Moya Silk, I was hooked on Courtney Barnett’s Sometimes I sit and think…and Sharon Van Etten’s Are We There? But after releasing my first EP, I listened to a lot of PJ Harvey as well as more recent bubble grunge bands like Girl Friday and Wednesday. ‘’

With this slightly polished grunge vibe the EP has going on, it’s easy to hear these influences, as fuzzy guitars are fused with the more catchy and dynamic melodies of the pop world.

Highlights of the EP include the gentle chromaticism of ‘Pudding and Pie’, the dreamy, indie-pop tinged chords of ‘Skinny Dipping’, and the well-crafted guitar work of ‘Dime a Dozen’. Throughout the project, the lyrics offer glimpses into both the mundane and meaningful, from the frustrations of customer service jobs, the terrifying feeling of letting yourself fall in love, and the irreplaceable bonds of early friendships.

For those drawn to music that’s raw yet melodic, and grounded in DIY grit, Posing Like Auteurs could well become your new companion to life’s ups and downs.
