New York-based artists Rachika Nayar and Nina Keith have crafted something truly special with new album Disiniblud. Keith and Nayar have wowed separately for years, as a self-trained composer and ambient fusion master, respectively, so it is no real surprise that their first collaborative effort is nothing short of breathtaking. With Disiniblud, the pair carries the listener on a lilting journey through old wounds, transformation, mortality and reinvention. While individual tracks of course stand out (for me it was the gentle, easy acceptance that sometimes life is too much conveyed in opening track ‘Give-upping’, ft. Julianna Barwick), experiencing Disiniblud as a whole work is a sensory embrace for all the neglected corners of your soul.
The imagery for me is like standing together in the abyss of our memory and reckoning with both the ineffable wonders and atrocities of our life experience, like we’re holding and protecting each other through that process and finding a way to take both the light and the dark.” – Keith
This is a partnership clearly rooted in deep love and mutual respect for one another. Both artist’s individual styles have been honed and tempered together into something reminiscent of each, but unique to Disiniblud. Creative approaches to the composition process also highlight how to become comfortable with the other’s methods. Nayar and Keith would spend time “cosplaying as each other” – learning each other’s instruments, or experimenting with the other’s equipment. This willingness to truly blend themselves, along with their music, is, I think, a major part of why Disiniblud is such a wonderful musical work. Check out the title track below to hear for yourself:
