The Beths, the beloved New Zealand indie-rock powerhouse, has returned with ‘No Joy’, the first single from their upcoming album Straight Line Was A Lie (out 29 August via ANTI-).

‘No Joy’ is Stokes at her most brutally honest, tackling anhedonia (yes, that numbing nothingness of depression and SSRIs) with lyrics that slice and shimmer:

“This year’s gonna kill me / Gonna kill me.”

It’s thunderous, melodic, deeply felt — indie rock for the serotonin-starved.

And the video? Anxiety, but make it playful. It’s a perfect visual companion to a song that’s about feeling nothing and somehow making it sound euphoric.

The full album promises more of this poetic push-pull: personal turmoil wrapped in pop perfection, all written during a chaotic writing retreat and a slow reckoning with circular growth. Straight Line Was A Lie is shaping up to be their most soul-searching, emotionally rich record yet.

And in even better news: The Beths are heading on a mammoth world tour this Autumn, with dates across the UK, Europe and North America. Catch them in London at the Roundhouse on 26 September – and get ready to feel all your feelings at once.
